How to Use a Wig Cap: The Step-by-Step Guide for Every Hair Type

A wig cap is a thin, breathable stocking that goes over your natural hair before you put on the wig. It serves three purposes: compressing your hair flat, providing grip for the wig's combs and clips, and creating a barrier between your scalp and the wig's interior materials. Using one correctly is the difference between a wig that feels secure and a wig that slides backward every time you turn your head.

Choose the Right Cap

Cap TypeBest ForColor
Nylon mesh capMost common. Breathable, lightweight, affordable. Works for all hair types.Nude, brown, black
Spandex capVery short hair or bald scalps. Provides maximum grip for wig combs on smooth skin.Nude, black
Mesh dome capMaximum breathability. Best for hot weather and sensitive scalps.Nude
Velvet grip bandNot a full cap — a headband-style velvet band that grips the wig. Alternative to full caps.Nude, black, brown

Color matching matters: If your wig has a lace part or you are wearing a wig where the cap might be visible through thin areas, match the cap color to your skin tone, not your hair color. A brown cap under a blonde wig with a visible part will look like a brown stripe on your scalp.

The Step-by-Step Method

1
Start with prepared hair. Your natural hair should be braided, twisted, or flattened against your head. The cap goes over prepared hair, not loose hair.
2
Hold the cap at the front edge — the side with the finished hem or seam. The open edge goes at the back (nape).
3
Place the front of the cap at your hairline. The cap should sit just behind your natural hairline — about a quarter inch back. This leaves room for the wig's lace front to sit directly on your skin without the cap showing through.
4
Pull the cap back over your head. Stretch it gently over your braids or twists. The cap should feel snug but not tight. If it leaves a red mark on your forehead, it is too tight.
5
Tuck every loose hair inside the cap. Use a rat-tail comb or your fingers to push stray hairs under the cap edge, especially around the ears and nape. A single escaped hair will poke through the wig and be visible.
6
Secure the cap. If the cap has an elastic edge, it should hold itself in place. If it slides, use bobby pins to secure the cap to your braids at the temples and nape. Now put on your wig over the cap.

🧠 Cap-Free: When to Skip It

You can wear a wig without a cap if: your hair is shaved or extremely short (the cap has nothing to grip), your scalp is irritated (the cap adds friction), you are wearing the wig for under 4 hours, or you use a velvet grip band instead. The cap is a tool, not a requirement. Use it when it helps. Skip it when it does not.

We stock wig caps in multiple colors, sizes, and materials — plus velvet grip bands for cap-free wear. The right foundation makes the wig.
