How to Trim Bangs on a Wig: The 3 Rules That Prevent Disaster
Cutting bangs on a wig is the #1 DIY styling move that ends in regret. Unlike natural hair, wig hair doesn't grow back. One bad snip and you're either living with crooked bangs for the life of the wig or spending money to replace it. Here's how to do it right — and more importantly, how to not do it wrong.
⚠️ THE THREE RULES
- Cut the wig ON your head, not on a stand. Bangs fall differently when the wig is stretched on a stand vs. when it's on your actual head. Cutting on a stand = bangs that are too short when you wear the wig. Always cut while wearing.
- Cut dry, not wet. Wet wig hair stretches and appears longer. When it dries, it shrinks. Bangs cut wet will end up shorter than intended. Always cut dry hair.
- Cut less than you think. You can always cut more. You can never uncut. Start by removing half of what you think you want to remove. Check in a mirror. Cut more if needed.
What You Need
- Sharp haircutting shears — not kitchen scissors, not craft scissors. Dull scissors crush the fiber instead of cutting it cleanly.
- A fine-tooth comb
- Sectioning clips
- A mirror in natural light if possible
The Method: Point Cutting (The Only Technique for Wig Bangs)
Do NOT cut straight across in a horizontal line. Straight-across cuts on wig hair create a blunt, unnatural edge that screams "I cut this myself." Instead, use point cutting:
- Put the wig on. Adjust it to exactly where you'll wear it.
- Comb the bangs straight down. Do not pull them taut — let them fall naturally.
- Decide your desired length. Mark it mentally.
- Hold the scissors vertically — tips pointing UP toward the ceiling, not horizontally across the hair.
- Snip into the ends at a vertical angle, removing tiny amounts. The vertical cut creates soft, feathered ends instead of a blunt line.
- Work across the bangs in small sections. Cut, check in the mirror, cut, check. Never cut a big chunk at once.
- After cutting, shake your head gently to let the bangs fall naturally. Check for any longer stragglers. Snip those individually.
✅ For side-swept bangs:
Cut at a slight diagonal — shorter on the side where the bangs begin, longer as they sweep across. Point-cut the ends at an angle following the sweep direction.
✅ For curtain bangs:
Part the bangs in the center. Cut each side at a downward angle from the center outward. The shortest point is at the center part; the longest is at the outer edge.
❌ Do NOT:
- Pull the bangs taut and cut — they'll spring back shorter
- Use regular scissors — the blunt edge will show
- Cut when the wig is wet
- Try to "even out" both sides by cutting more and more — step away if you've made more than three adjustment cuts

Locks of Love is often the first organization people think of, but they accept ponytails of natural hair — not finished wigs. If you're cutting your natural hair to donate, they're a great option. If you have finished wigs to donate, they're not the right recipient.

Before You Donate
- Wash and condition the wig thoroughly. Donate it in wearable condition.
- Check for damage. If the lace is torn, the cap is shedding heavily, or the fiber is matted beyond repair, the wig isn't donatable.
- Call ahead. Every organization has different needs and acceptance policies. A 5-minute phone call saves you from mailing a wig that will be rejected.
- Include a note with the wig details — cap size, fiber type, color name/number, approximate age. This helps the recipient organization match the wig to the right person.
