If the hair looks dusty, you used too much — brush it out with a wig comb. Do this once per wear or as needed. The DIY version of dry shampoo. Use a large fluffy makeup brush to lightly dust cornstarch or translucent baby powder onto the wig. Tap off excess from the brush before applying — too much powder turns the hair chalky. Concentrate on the crown and the part line. Brush through to distribute evenly. This method works but is messier than aerosol dry shampoo and harder to control the application amount.
A 15-minute soak in a sink of cool water with one capful of fabric softener can reduce shine by coating the fibers with a matte conditioning layer. After soaking, rinse lightly and air dry. Only attempt on a dark-colored wig you are willing to lose. Use extreme ventilation, gloves, and keep acetone away from the lace and cap. This is not a recommended method — it is included here as a warning, not as a guide.
The most reliable solution: buy wigs specifically manufactured with low-shine fiber. Premium synthetic wigs (in the $80–150 range) use fibers that are designed to have a matte, natural-looking finish from the factory. The price difference between a $30 shiny wig and an $80 low-shine wig is $50. The time you would spend on weekly dry shampoo and fabric softener soaks over the wig's 3–6 month lifespan is worth more than $50. Buy the right wig from the start, and you never need to think about shine at all.
Budget synthetic wigs (under $40) use basic modacrylic fiber with a naturally glossy finish. Mid-range wigs ($50–100) use treated fibers with a semi-matte coating.
