For wigs you're not wearing regularly — seasonal colors, special occasion pieces, backup units — use the "fold and protect" method:
- Wash and fully dry the wig. Never store a wig with product buildup — it attracts dust and can degrade the fiber over time.
- Gently detangle from ends to roots with a wide-tooth wig comb.
- Fold the wig in half lengthwise — ear tab to ear tab — with the hair facing inward. This protects the style from being crushed.
- Place in a hair net or a silk/satin bag. Avoid plastic bags — they trap moisture.
- Store in a box (the original wig box is ideal) in a cool, dry, dark place. A closet shelf away from windows works perfectly.
Human hair wigs benefit from an extra step: lightly mist with a leave-in conditioner before storing long-term. This prevents the hair from becoming brittle during storage. Do not do this with synthetic wigs — the moisture can interact with the fiber coating.

The biggest mistake travelers make: folding a wig in half and stuffing it in a suitcase under clothes. By the time you arrive, the wig has been crushed, creased, and tangled beyond quick repair. Instead:
- Wrap the wig in a silk scarf, fold gently, and place in a hard-sided container (a small hat box or dedicated wig travel case).
- If space is tight, use the original wig box — it's designed to protect the shape.
- Pack the wig on TOP of your clothes, not under them.
- Carry a travel-size detangling spray and mini comb in your carry-on.
