Let's skip the long intro. You have a synthetic wig. You want curls. You're scared of ruining it. These are the questions that actually matter, answered in the order you need them.
Look at the tag or product description. You're looking for one of these phrases:
If you bought the wig and threw away the packaging, do the strand test: take one hair from an inconspicuous area (nape), touch a warm flat iron to it briefly. If it melts or sizzles, it's not heat-friendly. If it curls, you're good.
Lower than you think. Start at 250°F and work up. The fiber takes the curl shape as it cools, not as it heats. More heat doesn't mean better curls — it means more fiber damage. Here's what I use:

You have two options. Both work. Neither involves direct heat.
Option A: Rollers + steam. This is the method I use most often. Set the wig on rollers (foam or velcro — whatever you have), arranging the sections the way you want the curls to fall. Hold a garment steamer about 6 inches from the hair and steam each roller for 10–15 seconds. Let the wig dry completely on the rollers — overnight is ideal. Remove rollers. The curls will hold until the next wash.
Why this works: Synthetic fiber has "style memory" — it holds the shape it was in when it cooled from a heated state. Steam provides the heat to relax the current memory. As the fiber dries and cools on the roller, it locks into the curled shape. The steam never gets hot enough to melt the fiber (212°F for steam vs. 320°F+ melting point for most synthetics).
Option B: Hot water set. Heat water to about 180°F — not boiling, but hot. For reference, that's about the temperature of very hot tap water. Set the wig on rollers. Carefully pour the hot water over the curled sections. Let the wig dry fully on the rollers. The heat of the water relaxes the fiber memory, and the cooling/drying on the rollers sets the new curl shape. This method is messier than steaming but works well for tight curls on non-heat-friendly wigs.
The cooling period is everything. On human hair, the curl sets while the hair is hot. On synthetic fiber, the curl sets while the fiber cools. If you let go of the curl while it's still warm, it will fall out. Here's the technique:
After all sections are curled and cooled, lightly mist with a flexible-hold hairspray formulated for synthetic wigs. Do not brush the curls out until the spray is dry.
Applying heat to a non-heat-friendly wig. That's it. That's the mistake. The fiber melts instantly on contact with a hot tool. There's no fixing it. The melted section turns hard and shiny, like melted plastic — because that's exactly what it is. If you're not 100% sure your wig is heat-friendly, use the steam method. Steam cannot melt synthetic fiber. Heat tools can. When in doubt, steam.
On heat-friendly synthetic: yes. Use a flat iron at low heat or steam the hair while brushing it straight. The heat relaxes the curl memory and resets it to straight.
On non-heat-friendly synthetic: yes, but only by wetting the wig completely and letting it air dry on a stand. Synthetic fiber resets to its factory style when it gets fully wet and air dries. If your wig came straight from the factory, a full wet-down + air dry will bring the straight texture back. If it came wavy or curly, it will return to that factory pattern.
🧠 The one thing to remember: Synthetic fiber doesn't behave like human hair. It doesn't need "nourishment." It doesn't respond to products the same way. What it responds to is heat (or steam), shape (rollers or curling iron), and cooling time. Master those three variables and you can make any synthetic wig look exactly the way you want.
